Session Introduction

From its humble beginnings in Sun labs, Java has become one of the top programming languages for building server side applications - if not the top. It is nearly everywhere, from banks to search engines to cell phones to desktop games. In the first part of our talk we'll explore what Java is, why it's useful, how to get started with Java, and how to keep current in the Java community.

A large part of Java's success though is due to another trend: Open Source. Open source code maintained by communities and companies runs a large part of the world. For instance, Linux, Apache, We'll look at how open source works and why you might want to consider getting involved in open source.
